Veterans Administration pays for Transcendental Meditation® Technique

Excerpt from an article by JOSEPH T. GERACE

…veterans representing each branch of the armed services formally announced that the Veterans Administration will pay for vets to learn the Transcendental Meditation technique.

The keynote speaker for the event, which was held at the Transcendental Meditation Program Center, was Dr. Jim Brooks, a psychiatrist practicing in Mt. Pleasant. Dr. Brooks did a landmark research study, published in the Journal of Counseling and Development (1), that compared the effects of the Transcendental Meditation technique on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) to counseling and therapy.

Dr. Brooks said, “Although it’s a little-known fact, the Veterans Administration will pay for veterans to learn the Transcendental Meditation technique. The reason is because of the hundreds of studies documenting the beneficial effects, especially on PTSD. It only makes sense that the VA has approved this for treatment.”

Dr. Brooks cites anxiety, depression, anger, emotional numbing, and alcohol and drug abuse as some of the symptoms of PTSD and recommended that any Veteran who experiences any of these symptoms request a prescription for the Transcendental Meditation technique from their VA doctor. “The Transcendental Meditation technique is shown to be effective in reducing or eliminating all of these symptoms” he said.

Dr. Brooks told the vets present that he personally saw dramatic changes “within a few days” in a factory worker who went from throwing wrenches at other workers to becoming more calm, relaxed, happy. “He stopped drinking and became a stellar employee,” Dr. Brooks said.

Ron Khare, a University Ph.D. candidate in psychology and Vietnam veteran, said, “The healing that the Transcendental Meditation technique brings is not only my experience, it is the experience of everyone, and the benefits are not restricted to war veterans.”

Marine veteran Robert Herron, Ph.D., brought a letter from the VA granting authorization to teach vets the Transcendental Meditation technique. Dr. Herron said, “Our government needs to inoculate our troops against the stress of military life by teaching the Transcendental Meditation technique to the troops as well as instructing our veterans.”
